Favorite Firearm Friday S&W Model 915

Overview

A classic among metal semi-auto 9mm pistols. The Smith & Wesson series of metal-framed pistols were very popular in the 80’s and 90’s and were issued to law enforcement for many years alongside pistols such as the Beretta 92fs. The Model 915 is a 3rd generation Smith pistol based on the Model 5904.

Review

This pistol is a classic robust and reliable double-action/single-action semi-auto. It’s an underrated option in the current firearm market and for the price, older guns like these should be considered. Currently, these pistols go anywhere from $400-$500 and you get a lot of bang for your buck. The ergonomics of the pistol are great, a mix between a Sig Sauer P226 and a 1911 style firearm. It comes with polymer grips from the factory but can be exchanged for wood or rubber. This model uses a 15 round magazine but aftermarket magazines made by Mecgar offer 17 round flush-fit magazines as well. It breaks down much like a Browning Hipower and is easy to clean and reassemble. The only real negative I have about the pistol is the lack of holster options for it. This can be said for many older firearms but if you are planning on carrying it, you are pretty much limited to leather holsters or a custom holster. I would recommend checking them out for yourself, especially if you are a fan of DA/SA-style firearms.
